A Simple Strategy For Cracking UPSC, IAS Preliminary Examination

By Vinay G.B.

Preliminary examination is intended to eliminate non serious candidates and provide an opportunity for the serious students to compete in the main examinations. Most of the aspirants think that preliminary examination is a tough nut to crack and they feel that it is the GS paper which makes their attempts miserable. It is a wrong perception. The truth is that GS is easy to score when it is prepared intelligently.

Every year coaching institutes fail to provide students with right guidance regarding GS(preliminary). Very few  questions are asked from their material. Their model question papers are crap. Even magazines do the same when they provide huge lists of expected questions, unfortunately they are always excepted by the UPSC.

UPSC wants candidates laden with facts regarding current and past events related to India and the world. It is amply evident from the past ten years question papers. Questions regarding history, polity, geography are no more important from the viewpoint of their historical perspective but with the present.

If you are serious enough to devote 6 hours every day for seven months before prelims you must be able to clear prelims assuming you are good in your optionals.

I am giving you a strategy for cracking GS based on last 8 years question paper pattern. If you are able to fallow this I assure you can score more than 80 with ease.

    - A total of 3,27,683 candidates had applied for this year’s(2007) examination. While 1,61,469 candidates appeared for the preliminary examinations, 9,266 candidates qualified for the mains and of them 1,886 were selected for the personality test. Finally 734 were selected for various services. This shows that more than 50% applicants do not attempt prelims! Of those who attempt my guess is that 30-40 percent are not very serious with their preparation. Another 30 percent involve fresh candidates and remaining are repeaters. It means that the competition is very narrow and those who work hard are ultimately rewarded.

  1. Number of Questions asked from different sections

  2. Current Events – 40-45 questions (43 in 2008 )

  3. Science & Technology – 30-35 questions (30 in 2008 )

  4. Geography – 35 questions (35 in 2008 )

  5. History – 15-18 questions (16 in 2008 )

  6. Numerical Ability – 10-15 questions (12 in 2008 )

  7. Government schemes, projects, committees – 5—8 questions (6 in 2008 )

  8. Polity – 5-10 questions (8 in 2008 )

    - This clearly shows that focus is shifting more towards current events, science & technology and geography. Those who are strong in any two of these sections can easily score more than 60 in GS paper.

  • What to read for the above topics

    1) For current events you must thoroughly read The Hindu, Economic Times, Frontline and any other competitive magazine (CS times, CS chronicle or Pratiyogita Darpan). Cometitive magazines should act as supplements and ready reckoner’s only. While you read these always try to focus more on people, places and events(such as G-8 meeting, Climate change summits etc.)

    2) At the end of every month revise important national and international events by making very short notes (one liners). Two months before prelims collect last 14 issues of competitive magazines and note down all important events in single lines and read them repeatedly. For places you must look at the atlas to store them in your long term memory. This will cost you only two weeks but earn you assured 40 marks.

    3) Additionally collect a diary of events released by the Hindu every January.  This will alone earn you around 6-10 marks for you!(click here to go there)

    4) Every time you read current events be proud of your widening knowledge about the world around you; this will help you in sustaining interest in newspapers and magazines.

    5) In the science and technology section UPSC is more interested in Space and space missions, nuclear energy, wildlife, human body, chemicals(currently debated- example, melamine), environmental issues(ex,marine pollution) , Nobel prizes and inventions. You do not have to read heaps of books for this. Read elementary science books first, watch Discovery, Nat Geo, BBC whenever you watch TV and be alert to science related news every day.

    6) Geography has been given prominence in the last 5 years with more than 30 questions being asked consistently. Geography of India alone carries around 25 questions.

-to score maximum in this section focus should be more on:

    - rivers, hydroelectric projects, lakes and dams (6 questions)

    - agriculture, irrigation, crop productions (3-4 questions)

    - wildlife sanctuaries, mountain ranges (4-5 questions)

    - mineral resources – new discoveries, place and their states (2-3 questions)

    - population, state boundaries, forest cover (4-5 questions)

    - census 2001, literacy, density, health indicators (3 questions)

    - power reactors-thermal, nuclear

    - in world geography focus should be more on current events related place, straits, seas, oceans and important cities- like those where G-8, G-20 meeting are held.

Two books you must read for this are; Geography of India by Khullar and Certificate course in Human Geography by Goh Cheng Leong.

  1. In history do not read ancient history if you have very less time (it is not in the syllabus too). Thoroughly read the modern history (1700 A.D. To 1947 A.D.), out of 16 questions in 2008, 13 were from modern history and rest were from post 1947 events. Most of the questions were related to important persons and their works. Therefore while you read history give importance to the personalities and their contributions. There will be a compulsory question on Mughals, Viceroys, Moderate freedom fighters, books written at that time, a newspaper of that time and important places of historical interest.

  1. In Indian polity concentrate on judiciary, Directive Principles of State policies, Fundamental rights and Legislature(state & union).

  2. At any cost do not forget to read about important schemes of the Govt. of India (refer India year book 2009 -don’t buy it, download it here for free!), PSUs, public institutes which have been newly setup, defence related issues such as new missile, air power technologies, and most recent economic indicators (refer www.epw.in).

  1. If you want to realize your dream you must pass the prelims and here your optional plays a crucial role. You must solve last 15 years question papers in your optionals not once or twice but as many times as possible. This will definitely help you in getting more than 40-50 questions correct at least by intelligent guesses.

If you have an internet connection; for world events see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Current_events

and for Nobel prizes and related information see, http://nobelprize.org/

I’m preparing for civils while working with an MNC, as earning is important for me.

I’m completely dedicated to studies during weekends.

but during weekdays I can spend only 2-3 hours.

  • Hi Srikanth,

    thanks for the feedback.
i believe u can clear prelims even by studying during weekends. but i think u must utilize every minute of those 2-3 hours.
    good luck

  • Hi Vinay,

thanks 4 guiding us all with such valuable suggestions. All the very best for you.

  • A minor correction- The reason for ancient history not being asked is it is not there in the syllabus itself.

Thanks a ton for uploading the Geography mains papers!

All the best for the results (and the interview) Vinay :)

  • Information is very useful, thanks.

  • Vinay,

  • I think it is still possible to prepare well for the prelims if you are good at GS. You can study your optional daily for 4 hours but intelligently. Just read 2 standard textbooks and repeatedly solve past 15 year questions.

If you are not so good at GS the above strategy can help u to prepare within short span of time.

Best of you luck buddy for your Interview. May the spirit of helping others will surely guide you through your pursuit to Destiny.

Im Subramani aka Chuppandi from chennai working in an engg. comp. as an mechanical engg for 3&half yrs after my B.Tech in Mech. And im 26 now which obviously means i have only few attempts…

Im very much interested in writing my CSE for the first time. Sadly I’ve sent my app form today only and have not prepared a bit till now… Though i’d like to give it this time. When i say so i mean giving all i can.

But i obviously have lot of apprehensions about how to go about. I have no one to guide me to which i believe you would come to my rescue. I prefer to write Mechanical Engg. as optional. I really donno if i should take any coaching class (Off from my work…) im afraid i can only spend few time for preparing… i have around (5-8am and 6-11pm) and a few holidays. do you think this much will get me there…

I just want someone to give me some window of hope and guidance. Please help me bro.

  • Hi vinay,

your tips are very useful to me. Am choosing optional in maths. can you pls suggest me to important in that & send me the sample question papers on that.

    Bhuvana

  • Hi Vinay,

    1. I tried the Seterra game. It is very good and I have started scoring 97% in some maps.
But I was disappointed when I noticed that (But did you notice ?) Kashmir has been shown to be part of Pakistan.
How can anyone do this ? I hope this was not the intention of software developer while developing Seterra.

    2. Can you tell me which Year Book should be read i.e. Manorama, Penguin, Sura’s etc. OR Year Book by Press Information Buerau ? Also how to approach a year book i.e. should one try to learn all the data by rote ?

    Waiting for your comments.

    Regards

  • Hi N S,

I think you should refer to Manorama just for facts n GK, but to know India u must go thru India year book by publication Division.

While reading year book focus more on Agriculture, Industries, Transport n developments in the field of Science n tech.

Most of the Atlases printed outside India show Kashmir as a part of Pakistan , China, and India.
But Indian atlases always show whole Kashmir as a part of India.

wish u a happy new year n gud luck

  • hey thanks buddy. Only today I bought the form and I read your valuable suggestions today only. How lucky I am.

    Thanks a ton.

My wishes to you for your success.

  • Hi vinay!
This is very excellent knoeledge sharing and i hope you can select mains also.
I have completed mechanical engineering in 2005. Now i decided to write CSE.I dont have much knowledge about india(G.S) round up since iam technical engineer. Can you suggest how to gain knowledge about india and important books which i have to read.

  • Thanks a lot and congrats for inserting confidence to all those candidates who prepares for the CSP exam.

  • dear sir,
i would like to know that is it compulsory to study 1 language from 8th schedule and which language should i choose for main exam as i know only two languages i.e. hindi and english and from which books shall i refer for hindi language, in case if i choose it.

  • Hi Vinay,
Your strategy looks very rational and would appreciate for providing such statistics.
Though aimed at 2010 exam, I would like to work sometime from now. So can you say me what would be an ideal optional to choose. I am an Engg, graduate.
I earlier chose Electrical Engg, due to my dominance in the subject but later I felt choosing Geography/Sociology and Public Administration would serve dual purpose
    a) The geography/sociology reading would also make it subjective hence one is inadvertently preparing for GS.
    b) Essay writing may have any one of the topics from the above two subjects(at least one) hence would make them more coherent to the subject the essay dealt with.

Could you comment on this approach, and please say is it wise to start a plan by selecting this too.
Though I have a subject dominance on Elec. Engg.,
I feel above subjects would greatly inter-related with one another.
What is your strategy on this??

  • Hello Srinath,

The combination u have chosen is really good, but i think electrical engineering may be good in mains coz success rate is high for it- anyways u can look at last 15 years questions n then decide about it.
    and thanks for the comment
    vinay

  • Hi Vinay,
Thanks for ur comments, I have done a research over some 5 yrs of previous papers on Electrical Engg., I feel I may be able to get good marks (but not the best) in the subject but I personally feel that choosing any paper of Interest would serve not only its purpose but also would need to work for the other indirectly.
Though I am not flair in either of the optionals, do you think is it possible for me to have a good knowledge on them within these formidable days?
To Start with, what would be your suggestion for me to kick start for the preparation?
    Please help

  • Hi Srinath,
If your optional for prelims is geography I would suggest u to get thoroughly familiarised with places around the world- countries, capitals, important cities, lakes, oceans, seas, straits, mountains…….in a good atlas.as u have one whole year with u. This makes u well prepared for the theoretical part n preps becomes very easy.

For GS fallow the strategy that I have posted on my blog if it suits u.

    Good Luck :)

    vinay

  • Thanks for Your immediate reply.
I am now following your strategy only and you made my job more easier bcoz i was also doin the same to categorize the context of where it’s been asked and your job made mine easy. Thanks for it …
I would also like to add up a couple of things in place
I have seen a couple of question dealing with Corporate world and it would be more useful for answering some of them. However you covered them as ‘Current Events’
All the very best for you to bcum an IAS.
I would like to see you as Vinay IAS asap….

  • Can you tell how much a student belonging to general quota has to get to clear the prelims?

  • hi,i read ur precious words which gave me clear idea abt how &what to prepare .this is fine, my annswer to this message is only after clearing my prelims .i think you r asoul sent by shiv baba……….thankyou

  • @Anand Bhai….

Since the introduction of negative marking, the cut-offs have been significantly reduced.
    According to http://resourcecentre.in/cut-off.htm

If you are able to get 230+ marks in prelims(GS 55 ques right and optional around 70), you can easily clear it.But sice scaling is done in optional paper, you might have to get 5 more ques right in optional depending on your optional.

Hope you got some idea :)

  • Hi Vinay,

Wish you the very best for the results.
The info you gave is really helpful, rarely people share their insights with others given the competition out there.

    Keep blogging..

  • Hi Vinay,

Thanks for your suggestions. They were really insightful.I have got one question. Were you working while preparing ?.Please suggest bcos I am having a dilemma of whether I should join the company or resign the job and prepare.

  • Hi Anand,

I was not in any job while preparing, even now i am preparing on my own.

my experience tell me that it’s very difficult to prepare while working, moreover competition has increased drastically now.

    Finally it’s your decision.

    Good Luck

    Vinay

  • Hi Vinay,

  • Hi Vinay,
I hope I am not disturbing you too much.Just one last question. As Civil service was not in my choice until two months back,I did not concentrate on general knowledge. Now i fnd that my GK level is poor.Is one year sufficient?

  • Hi Anand,
I think 1 year is sufficient, but gaining knowledge is an everyday process and you can’t get much by memorizing…………so read extensively-magazines,papers,books(non-fiction) etc.

    all the best :)

  • Hi vinay,
What rank should one get to get into the Indian Foreign Service?

    All the best for you.

  • Hi T.R.
I think one must get below 70 rank to get into IFS as vacancies are very less.

  • Hi Vinay,Really a good post.Thank you.
How you did in your mains?
    waiting to hear from you!!!

    Once again thank you!

  • Hi Patil,

I didn’t clear mains this time.

    Good luck

  • Hey Vinay,
    Thank you for the reply.
    good luck next time!
    was it your first attempt?
    I have a doubt,can u pls clear?
1)are we allowed to write optional subjects like history,etc..(other than kannada literature) and essay in kannada ?

    Kind rgrds,
    Patil

  • Hi Patil,

    It was my second attempt.

You can take Mains exam completely in Kannada medium also(optionals, essay and GS). You have to mention your choice in prelims application itself.

You can interview in Kannada also, there will be a translator for help.

  • You can give interview in your mother tongue

  • Hi vinay,

I want to take civils 2010 attempt.I am working in mnc in hyderabad.I want to take geography in prelimns and Geo and Anthro in mains.I want to know the persons who provide coaching for geography as it is not possible for me to attend reguraly except on weekends.Ur suggestions regarding GS are excellent. Thanks a lot for ur valuable suggestions.Wishing u all the best

  • Hello Rajani,

    Thanks for the comment.

My optional is also Geography for both Prelims and Mains, other being Kannada Literature.

For Geography coaching – following institutions are good:
    1) Alok Ranjan
    2) Interactions
    3)Ensemble
All 3 are in Delhi, this june I am joining one of them.
In Hyderabad – I don’t have any Idea.

    Good Luck

  • Simply good throwing light what to read for GS.

  • Hi Vinay,
    tumba tumba danyavadagalu.
Sorry to disturb u, I wish to write only optional subjects in kannada medium, not the the compulsory papers like GS n interview,is it possible?or all the mains paper to be write in same medium?

    Thank you!

    Patil

  • Hi Patil,

You can’t write like that – you have to write all papers in mentioned medium.

Nim Kannada language skills chennagidre go for it – tumba advantages ide.

    Good luck to u

  • Thank you very much Vinay.
Please pls suggest me the authors name for Kannada literature..
    Thanks once again!!

  • hi vinay…
i m in final semester of B.E. chem engg. and hv to appear 4 prelims of ias exam this yr…
my preparation is not good, so i m planning to not gv the exam this yr… will my not appearing for the exam be counted as an attempt ? only 4 attempts are there for the gen category, so i don’t think that i shud waste my attempt this yr… but i hv already filled the form, plz reply …

  • Hello Anshu,

Not attempting prelims exam, that is not writing it in person is considered as a NON ATTEMPT.

So you don’t need to worry about this. It is a very good decision not to write when your preparation is not adequate.

Even I suggest you to not to write as you have got only four attempts and they are precious too.

Once again let me clarify that merely applying is not considered an attempt – even if you get your admission ticket.

    Cheer up and prepare well.

    Good Luck

  • Hi Vinay

Which coachingcentre do you think is the best for economics in delhi?

Also, can I crack the prelims and get a good score (in top 50 studunts) in the mains, if I don’t join a coaching centre?

What advantages do coaching centres have over self-preparation?

I have heard that scoring and scaling down in mains is done very arbitrarily, that there are no norms or guidelines for paper checkers on how to check the papers, and this is why people end up giving this exam year after year. Is it true?

Why hanen’t you cleared it even in two attempts, assuming that you put in considerale amount of hard work (around 10 hours a day)?

Since we are not given our answer sheets after the results have been declared, how do we find out in which areas our performance was bad?

I would prefer you to please reply at my e-mail address.

  • Hi Vinay,

What is the cut-off for Mains ? Any idea.

  • Hello SUdeep,

Last time it was about 1020 out of 2000 for general category.

This time it is less than that for sure – may be around 960-970.

  • thanks for giving me your strategy.it inspire me to prepare upsc

  • Hi Vinay,

Are the questions in prelims repeated, I mean if I go through previous years papers what are the chances of facing the same questions.

  • Hy man..was really good reading ur tips…wish u luck and all da best.

Hope i can crack it as well. Me Just BA with Pol sc.

    Regards

  • Hi vinay,
I wanna be a honest officer, but the thought of challenges posed by corrupt politicians pushes me back.
Is IAS a good and clean career?
I wanna serve the nation, but what if politicians don’t allow me to do so?What r ur views?

  • Forgive if i had asked anything wrong …no offence intended

  • IAS is an excellent career. Corruption is the consequence of greed. Politicians can be kept at distance if you are honest and strict. It depends on you entirely.

Don’t worry much on politicians, start preparing for the exam.

  • Hello Vinay,
I’ve completed my graduation this year, with Chemistry (H). I’ve already decided to take Chemistry as the common optional subject in preli as well as for mains. The second optional subject, I chosed ( for availability of books and interest ) , is History. Can you please tell me wheather History is a scoring one for mains or not ? Moreover do you know about the cut- off for Chemistry, in the mains ? [ I'm asking the second question as I have learned, from somewhere, that, UPSC selects the candidates for the mains, in such a way, so that students from each educational background gets admit to the mains...... Am I right in this case ? If not, then please forgive.. ]

  • I’m SORRY…. for typing mistake…… The cut-off marks, I wanted to know for Chemistry is for the Preli…. not for the mains …

  • how to prepare for ‘NUmerical problems’ at IAS(pre)

  • Hello guys,

Even I am preparing for Civil Services and can’t reply to all comments because of time constraint. I am sorry for that. But I welcome other readers to share your knowledge if you know something about the questions asked here by the readers.

  • Hey Sudeepto,

You have Physics, Chemistry, maths, Electrical Engg, and MEchanical Engg as optionals for both prelims and mains.

c in which you have good command and then go thru past questions, syllabus. then decide.

  • sir,
i completed my BE production engg now. i would like to take mechanical enginerring & management as my optional…
where do i get study materials

  • Hi Velmurugan,

I think you can get relevant material from Brilliant Tutorials, Chennai.

  • Hi Vinay,This blog is very much useful and valuable for the aspirants like me. I need the suggestion from and help from you.I am the BE(Computer Science),Presently am woking as the software Engg in 1 pvt company in Bangalore. I have ambition to become IAS from my childhood. But i am unable to get prepare for Examination.(Not getting time). So i am planning to quit this job.( But i am from the middle class family,Taking this decision also bit difficult….So pls give me ur suggestion regard this).I have applied for the UPSC prelims-2009.I have opted for Maths unknowing. Now only 1 week is left for the exam.(I don’t know what to do should i need to take the exam or not,This is my 1st try.And also suggest me which subject is best for opting ).

  • Hi Harikrishna,
    Thanks for the comment.

Before you quit the job convince your family about your plan. It takes minimum two years to crack this exam.

It is better to dedicate whole time to preparation. It’s very difficult to prepare while working that too in IT sector.

I think it would be prudent if you don’t give exam this year. Better not give as you are not prepared and if you fail you will unnecessarily lose extremely precious attempt.

Maths is not advisable for prelims as you will have only 2hrs to solve 120 questions – it consumes more time than say history or geography optionals.

    Good Luck

  • Thanks for such a valuable information.

  • hi vinay

thanks for valuable information and doing a great job by sharing your knowledge. i will surely keep in mind ur suggestions

  • You are welcome Vidya

  • You must b knowing we have preliminary exam day after tomorrow…..

You start with GS….it’s the base. Then have look at all syllabuses and decide depending on your interest. Give preference to your interest first then go for precious year question papers.

    Good luck.

  • hi vinay,
    u r doing a great job.
i m 2nd year btech student from kolkata
i was dreaming for upsc since my childhood days.i ve started preparing for upsc.i will take history as optional in pre .can u suggest me whether history is good or not?as i ve very few knowledge abt upsc
    what is cuttoff of prelims?
how much answers i ve to answer correctly
can u kindly advice hw shld i prepare?

  • Hi Dilip,

I think history is very vast for prelims, but if u have good interest u can go for it.

usually cut off will be around 220 out of 450 marks in prelims.

if u can get 80 correct in optional and 60+ in GS be sure of clearing prelims.

    good luck
